Captain Ron

Screen favourite Kurt Russell (VANILLA SKY, STARGATE) teams up with funnyman Martin Short (FATHER OF THE BRIDE I&II, JUNGLE2JUNGLE) in an outrageously wild comedy that’s sure to drive you overboard! Russell plays hilariously laid-back Captain Ron — a vagabond seaman who charts a course for comedy when he skippers the newly inherited Caribbean yacht of corporate executive Martin Harvey (Short) and his family! With his dubious nautical skills, Captain Ron takes the helm and creates wave after wave of hilarity as he leads the Harvey’s on a wildly amusing oceanic voyage in their dilapidated sailing vessel, all the while driving well-meaning Martin Harvey off the deep end.

Dead Calm

There are several occasions when this rousing Australian thriller from 1987 should have ended with a well-placed shot from a speargun or a stronger knot of rope, but you don’t think about these nit-picky details when you’re being scared out of your wits. In a role that catapulted her to international stardom, Nicole Kidman plays a young wife who’s joined her husband (Sam Neill) on a yachting trip to recover from the tragic death of their son. Far out to sea, they encounter a sinking ship with one survivor (Billy Zane, ten years before Titanic), but inviting him aboard turns out to be a very bad mistake. While Neill attempts to salvage the sinking boat, Kidman is fighting for her life against the psychotic Zane–a villain so creepy that you eagerly look forward to his demise. By the time that moment arrives director Phillip Noyce has resorted to a typical slasher-movie climax (proving that no boat should be without a flare gun), but until then Dead Calm is a nail-biting thriller that’s guaranteed to keep you in a state of nail-biting suspense. –Jeff Shannon

Popeye

Based on the long-running comic strip created by E.C. Segar (and less on the animated cartoons created by Max Fleischer, which were decidedly different in tone and approach), Popeye follows the sailor man with the mighty arms (played by Robin Williams in his first major film role) as he arrives in the seaside community of Sweethaven in search of his long-lost father. Popeye meets and quickly f alls for the slender Olive Oyl (Sh elley Duvall, in the role she was born to play), but Olive’s hand has al ready been promised to the hulking Bluto (Paul Smith), of whom Olive ca n say little except, well, he’s large. Eventually, Popeye and Olive are brought together by Swee’ Pea (Wesley Ivan Hurt), an adorable foundling , and Popeye finally meets his dad, Poopdeck Pappy (Ray Walston). Mutiny on the Bounty

Just sit right back and you’ll hear a tale, a tale of a fateful trip…. Based on the classic novel by Charles Nordhoff and James Norman Hall, this magnificently-photographed three-hour tour charts the tortuous and tragic course of the Bounty, which, in 1787, sailed from England to Tahiti on a “grocer’s errand” to transplant breadfruit plants in Jamaica. As the voyage progresses, tensions mount between the heartless disciplinarian Captain Bligh (a commanding Trevor Howard) and his chief officer, Fletcher Christian (Marlon Brando), who does not subscribe to Bligh’s philosophy that cruelty with cause is not cruelty. Richard Harris costars as John Mills, an abused crew member who plants the seeds of treason against Bligh. Mutiny on the Bounty is a see-worthy saga that boasts a provocative Brando performance (his Christian is initially so foppish he makes Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow look like Errol Flynn in The Sea Hawk) and great action set pieces (a raging storm as the Bounty attempts to navigate Cape Horn). And in how many did this film inspire dreams of sailing away to Tahiti? Brando was among them. He married his ravishing costar Tarita, and later bought himself a French Polynesian island. This “Special Edition” replicates the film’s original prestigious road show presentation, complete with Overture, Intermission, Entr’acte, and Exit music. –Donald Liebenson
